Jefferson High School offers a plethora of Advanced Placement courses.  At the end of the year, in early May, these classes culminate in an optional (but worthwhile) AP test that is held at an off-site location.  AP exams allow students to potentially gain credit or advanced standing in college.  AP exams are scored within a 1-5 range - scores with a 3 or higher are generally considered passing for credit with most major colleges or universities.

Students who take AP courses will earn a weighted grade for each course on a 5.0 scale. Weighted grades make it possible for students’ grade point averages to rise above a cumulative 4.0.

For more information, see Ms. Jubb in the Counseling Office or visit the College Board.

Jefferson High School hosts the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) one time each year in October.  This exam is designed for students in 10th and 11th grade only, with the junior year serving as the qualifying year for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

For more information, contact Ms. DeHaven in the Counseling Office.

The ASVAB is a nationally-normed, multi-aptitude test battery that has been provided to high schools and post-secondary schools since 1968.  The ASVAB was developed by the U.S. Department of Defense.  The ASVAB Career Exploration Program was developed with input from a panel of career development experts and designed to encourage students to increase their level of self-knowledge and to understand how that information could be linked to civilian and military occupational characteristics.  The ASVAB Program recently was re-designed to be helpful to virtually all students, whether they are planning on immediate employment after high school in civilian or military occupations, or further education at a university, community college, or vocational institution.

Jefferson High School hosts the ASVAB once each year in the fall.  For more information, see Mrs. Hamrick in the Counseling Office.
