West Virginia Promise Scholarship

The Promise Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship for West Virginia residents.   Students receiving the Promise Scholarship will receive annual awards up to $4,750 which can be used at public or independent colleges and universities in West Virginia.

Students must submit an application and FAFSA by March 1 during their senior year, even if they have not met all requirements by March 1.


Timeline

OCTOBER 1
The PROMISE Application is open on CFWV.com.  The deadline to apply is March 1.

OCTOBER 1
The new FAFSA will be available on www.fafsa.gov.

MARCH 1
PROMISE Application and FAFSA Filing Deadline

Students must complete the PROMISE Scholarship Application on CFWV.com by this date. Students must apply by March 1, even if they have not yet met all requirements.

In order to be considered for Promise Scholarship, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed on fafsa.gov by March 1.

APRIL
Initial award letters are emailed to PROMISE Scholars.

JUNE 5, 2021: SAT
Last date to take the SAT to establish scholarship eligibility. 

JULY 17, 2021: ACT
Last date to take the ACT to establish scholarship eligibility.

Eligibility Requirements

Academic Requirements
Must complete high school graduation requirements at a West Virginia public or private high school.  Must complete at least one half of credits required for high school graduation through attendance at a public or private high school in the state of West Virginia.  Must achieve a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 in both core courses AND overall coursework.

Minimum Test Score Requirements
ACT score requirement:  22 composite score with a minimum of 20 in English, Mathematics, Science, and Reading.

SAT score requirement: Total score of 1100 with a minimum of 520 in Math and 530 in Evidence Based Reading and Writing. The SAT writing portion is not included in the calculation of the composite score.


Scores must be from a single testing date and cannot be combined from multiple test sessions.

Last test dates to qualify for PROMISE:
SAT - June 5, 2021
ACT - July 17, 2021

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS
A student and his/her parents must have resided in West Virginia continuously for twelve consecutive months preceding the PROMISE Scholarship deadline, unless member of armed services or a military dependent under Section 6 of the PROMISE Scholarship Program Rule .
