Military
The United States
Military is an honorable and distinguished option for students who are
interested in being more than themselves when they graduate from
Jefferson High School. Students who are interested in joining the
military (or may be on the fence about joining) can use this page as a
starting block to gather information and resources. For an article
outlining 11 reasons why you should join to military,
If
you are interested in the military - continue scrolling through this
information, speak with your school counselor, speak with the AFJROTC,
or speak with a local recruiter. Local recruiters stop by once a month
here at school, and you can contact the local offices with the
information provided below.
ASVAB
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a
nationally-normed, multi-aptitude test battery that has been provided to
high schools and post-secondary schools since 1968 to assess student
academic and career occupation strengths and weaknesses. Not only does
each branch of the military have a minimum ASVAB score, but each
job in the Military has a corresponding ASVAB score - or range -that a
student must achieve in order to qualify. Of course, this is only a
portion of the qualifications for branch enlistment and career
opportunities (much like the college admission tests in the college
enrollment process), but it a pivotal that you do your best on the ASVAB
to achieve the highest levels of success within the military.
The
ASVAB is administered once per academic year - usually in the fall
semester - here at JHS. For more information about the ASVAB and
practice materials and tests,

Air Force Junior R.O.T.C.
Students who may have
interest in the military can certainly get a trial run here at Jefferson
High School with the Air Force Junior R.O.T.C. program. As one of the
U.S.A.'s foremost Air Force Junior R.O.T.C. programs that has been a
Distinguished Unit Award Recipient for 12 straight years, students have
the opportunity to:
- potential to enlist with an advancement in rank (3 yrs completion)
- explore academic and career opportunities
- develop positive citizenship through community work
- develop positive personal and social growth
- prepare for the ASVAB
Students
and parents who are interested in the JHS AFJROTC program should speak
with their school counselor or one of our esteemed instructors: Major
Phil Suydam,
Senior Master Sergeant Jason Morris, or Master Sergeant Mike Langdon.
You are also encouraged to check out the
AFJROTC webpage!
R.O.T.C. in College
Students interested in
attending college directly after high school but still wishing to serve
in the military can do both at the same time via R.O.T.C. in college.
R.O.T.C. programs can provide many academic and financial incentives
for students who might not otherwise have the opportunities to attend
the school of their choice. R.O.T.C. graduates will also have an
officer rank when you commission. Keep in mind that most programs
encourage and expect an active service commitment of at least 4 years
post-graduation. Check with your college preference to see if they have
an active R.O.T.C. program and which branch runs it.

Service Academies
Conversely, students who
would like to experience a military environment while getting a
first-class education, the five Service academies are the cream of the
crop. Selection into a service academy nets the cadet a free education,
admission into their chosen branch of the military as a 2nd Lt. officer
with commission, potential perks with rank advancement, and medical and
dental expenses paid while attending the academy. Visit one of the
five academy websites below for more information and admissions
requirements.
