Coach John Lowery

In 2018, Coach John Lowery (1973-Present) will enter his 48th season (46th year at Jefferson) as a head coach at the high school level. Through 45 years and parts of five decades at the helm Coach Lowery has amassed 30 Sectional titles, 24 Regional titles, 24 State Tournament appearances, 4 State Runners-Up, and 12 State Championships which includes a "3-peat" spanning 1991-1993 and "back-to-back" titles in 1998-1999 and 2015-2016 as well. The program under Lowery's watch has won at least one State Championship in each of the last five decades.

Coach Lowery's record in 45 years at JHS is 1264 wins with 310 losses and 3 ties. His overall record, including two years at the now-defunct Harpers Ferry High School, is 1283 wins, 329 losses, and 3 ties. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations' (NFHS) Record Book, he currently ranks 2nd among active high school coaches and 3rd all-time in coaching victories (1 - Gene Schultz of Iowa with 1578 wins and 2 - Dennis Olejniczak, also of Iowa, with 1321). With his win against Freedom High School on March 14, 2008, he became the 10th high school coach in the nation to achieve the 1,000 win mark and the first West Virginia coach to reach 1,000 wins in any sport. Coach Lowery hit another career milestone during the 2014 season with his 1500th game as a head coach. The Jefferson Varsity Baseball Program currently ranks 13th in the nation for the most State Championships and 12th in the nation for the most wins in high school history.

In 2002, Coach Lowery was inducted into the NFHS Hall of Fame. In 2003, he was inducted as a member of the Inaugural Class of the WV Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. In 2009, Coach Lowery was inducted into the National High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The NFHS recently awarded Lowery as the 2011 Mideast Sectional Coach of the Year in Baseball. The Mideast Section includes Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. In 2011, he was also awarded the Kenny Anders Distinguished Service Award from the City of Ranson, WV. Starting in 2016, the WV Sports Writers Association Player of the Year Award will be known as the "John Lowery Award".
